Testosterone Replacement Therapy for Men: The Benefits & Risks
Recently, I have learned that many male friends and colleagues are taking Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). This prompted me to research the potential benefits and risks and host a workshop where men in our community could access more information and have their questions answered (see workshop details below).
There can be a stigma with testosterone treatment causing men to think it is a sign of weakness to supplement their levels back to what they experienced in their younger years. There is also a sense of skepticism amongst some in the medical community causing many men to remain quiet about their treatment. However, not discussing this treatment option openly could cause many men to make uneducated decisions.
TRT is a medical treatment designed to restore low testosterone levels in men. As with any medical treatment, TRT has its benefits and risks, and determining if you are an ideal candidate involves careful consideration, medical evaluation and important discussions with your physician.
Jeff Grimm, NP, a local expert in Anti-aging & Functional medicine with 15 years clinical experience in hormone related treatments and founder of BioLoungePDX, a longevity and functional medicine clinic, will discuss the following benefits and potential risks at the free workshop on June 25th.
Benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Improved Energy Levels and Mood
Many men report feeling more energetic and experiencing an uplifted mood after starting TRT.
Enhanced Libido and Sexual Function
One of the primary benefits of TRT is the restoration of sexual desire and performance. Men with low testosterone often experience a diminished sex drive, and TRT can help rekindle sexual interest and improve erectile function.
Increased Muscle Mass and Strength
Testosterone plays a key role in muscle development. TRT can help increase muscle mass and strength, making it easier for men to maintain an active lifestyle and achieve their fitness goals.
Better Bone Density
Testosterone is crucial for bone health. Men undergoing TRT often see improvements in bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
Improved Cognitive Function
Some studies suggest that TRT can enhance cognitive abilities such as memory and concentration, helping men stay sharp as they age.
Risks of Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Cardiovascular Risks
There is a current FDA black box warning label that cautions patients as TRT in some studies has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular issues, including heart attacks and strokes. It is essential to discuss these possible risks with a healthcare provider, especially for men with pre-existing heart conditions.
Acne/Oily Skin
Testosterone and other androgen hormones can provoke acne/oily skin in susceptible individuals.
Breast Issues
TRT may cause breast enlargement (gynecomastia), and nipple/breast sensitivity in certain individuals though rare.
Blood
Testosterone can increase blood thickness (increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit) also known as secondary erythrocytosis
Determining If You Are an Ideal Candidate
To determine if TRT is right for you, a thorough medical evaluation is essential. This typically includes:
Blood Tests
Confirming low testosterone levels through multiple blood tests taken at different times of the day.
Symptom Assessment
Evaluating symptoms such as fatigue, low libido, and mood changes.
Medical History
Reviewing your overall health, including cardiovascular health, prostate health, and any history of blood clotting disorders.
Discussion with a Specialist
Consulting with a medical professional who specializes in hormonal therapies and has an extensive understanding of the potential benefits and risks.
TRT can significantly improve the quality of life for men with low testosterone. A careful and personalized approach, guided by a healthcare professional, is crucial to determining if TRT is the best option for you.
