Burn The Turkey!
It’s estimated that the average American will consume 5000+ calories on Thanksgiving Day. Most people enjoy a bigger than usual breakfast, Thanksgiving meal and we can’t forget the left-overs later in the evening. We tend to practice an all-out gorge until you’re about to burst with a retreat to the couch afterwards because you’re just too stuffed to move. Since the only activity most people do on Thanksgiving is the walk from the kitchen to the TV, Thanksgiving can wreck havoc on your health.
It doesn’t have to be this way – everyone always regrets it afterwards! This year, we’re going to be proactive and burn the calories before we consume them! You’ll also find that if you do a workout before Thanksgiving dinner, you will tend to make better choices and be less likely to be excessive in your over-eating.
Here’s some easy ways to burn those Thanksgiving calories:
Get your workout in:
Head to your local gym for a quick workout (many are open for limited hours) or take a run, walk or bike ride around the neighborhood. Many facilities and clubs are offering FREE Thanksgiving Day workouts. Here’s some great options:
- Northwest Personal Training – 1011 Broadway in Downtown Vancouver is offering a FREE ‘Workout for your Soul’ Cardio and Muscle Conditioning class on Thanksgiving morning from 9am-10am. They are just asking that you bring some non-perishable donations for SHARE shelter. Call 360.574.7292 if you have any questions.
- 3SIX0 Fitness Club – 14010 Ne 3rd Ct in Salmon Creek is offering 3 different types of workouts including an Advanced and Intermediate CrossFit workout and a Bootcamp session all starting at 8am on Thanksgiving morning. Call 360.574.2400 if you have any questions.
- Get Bold Events is offering a FREE Thanksgiving Day 5K or 10K Run/Walk along the beautiful Lewis River starting at 9am on Thanksgiving morning. They are just asking for non-perishable donations to North County Food Bank. The starting point is at 23100 NE Hantwick Rd, Yacolt, WA. Learn More.
If you’ve got family visiting, do it first thing in the morning before people wake-up. Or inspire them to workout with you! Remember that a workout will actually make you feel better and help to suppress your appetite so you’re less likely to overeat.
Burn a little bit here and there!
You may not be motivated or have the time to do a full workout but if you look for quick and easy ways to burn a few calories throughout the day, it can really add up. Suggest to your family that before desert is served, everyone go for a beautiful walk around the neighborhood. Or plan some fun activities while you allow your body to process your meal. For example, plan a fun game of charades, break out an active video game like Dance Party, or perhaps a quick game of basketball, flag football or tag will provide some fun active quality time with your friends and family. Or maybe you can earn some brownie points with mom, grandma or Aunt Jane by raking some leaves. Bottom line, move your body and you’ll feel a lot better!
You can still enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner without having everyone feeling bloated and horrible for the rest of the evening and suffering a Thanksgiving Hang-over the next day!
