Herrera Beutler’s district mostly white, not wealthy
Washington state’s 3rd Congressional District, represented in the U.S. House by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, is made up of majority of white constituents with a median household income of $51,366, according to recent Census data.
The Camas Republican’s district covers eight counties in Southwest Washington, including Clark County. Earlier this year, the U.S. Census Bureau released information for each Congressional district for the 113th Congress. The statistics revealed that Herrera Beutler’s district:
- Has a total population of nearly 681,000 people.
- Has slightly more women than man. There are an estimated 344,813 women and 336,102 men.
- Has a fair amount of high school graduates (89.5 percent), but not as many adults age 25 and older with a four-year college degree (23.1 percent).
- Has an estimated 67,782 civilian veterans. That’s more than 13 percent of the district’s adult population.
- Is mostly white. More than 87 percent of her district is white, while one percent is African American, one percent is American Indian, 3 percent is Asian American, 4 percent identify as “two or more races,” and 2 percent identify as “some other race,” according to the report.
- Has 54,468 people who identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino.
- Has more buildings occupied by homeowners than buildings occupied by renters. Of the district’s nearly 260,000 housing units, 173,718 are lived in by the building’s owner and 86,204 are lived in by renters.
- Has 94,412 people who are age 65 or older, and nearly twice that many (184,411) who are under 20 years old.
The estimates were calculated using the Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the most recent information available at the time. The median household income statistic from 2011 was adjusted for inflation.
