It is that time of the year, and all the flowers are in bloom and grass is growing. Don’t you love spring? This is the start for allergies in humans as well as pets. Yep your pet can have allergies to the grass as well as the blooming plants and trees or even food. My last big dog (Sundance) was allergic to everything, grass made him sneeze and dog food was a challenge of all kinds. He lived with it all his 16 years and had to be on steroids all his life to control them. After thousands spent on test we found out he was just a bad allergy case. If you have a dog with allergy’s they have all kinds of new foods on the market to help you out. Lucky for us here in the NW we have tons of pet stores to help get the best for your dogs. Diet plays a big role in pets allergies so consult your vet for the best way to treat allergies in your pets.
The bees are out and puppies love to chase bugs as I recently found out. My 4 mo. old Yorkie pup went on the bee hunt and got stung. She came in limping and I checked her foot and found a stinger. Most dogs don’t have a problem with stings. But not Maya within minutes she was lethargic and starting pooing and throwing up at the same time. So I rushed her to the vet right away. She recovered after some shots. But that was scary and what if I wasn’t home. With the bushes in full bloom they are full of bees. Now I have to keep liquid benadryl on had at all times. She is just a baby and bugs are toys to her at this age. Lets hope she doesn’t eat any poisonous ones. She had a spider in her mouth this morning. I just about jumped out of my skin when I told her to give it to me, she put it right in my hand still crawling. Yep I love animals, but I am not a fan of bugs of any kind.
Also shedding of winter coat starts now this will set off some of the human allergies. Those who have the dog with the thick winter fur may want to invest in a good de-shedding brush. My old dog butch would shed so much we did it at the park, other wise our neighbors complained of the massive amounts of hair floating in their yard. The birds can use some of it for nesting.
This is also the season when they need the flea and tick treatments. I don’t recommend the cheap ones as they don’t always work. Some dogs can be allergic to them as well. My Butch swelled up like a lion with flea shampoo so make sure it is safe to use on your pet. I use Advantage 2 as it repels those pesky skeeters too. Take a spring walk and take the time to stop and enjoy the flowers even if you can’t smell them.
