Game notes: More than midway through both semifinal games, it looked like it might be Chiawana vs. Gonzaga Prep in this week’s title game. Chiawana jumped out to a 14-0 lead, aided by a Sumner fumble deep in Spartan territory that set up the Riverhawks’ second touchdown. Sumner was driving for a potential tying touchdown late in the first half. Instead, Brooks Zaro came up with a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown, putting Chiawana up 21-7 at halftime. But Sumner then shut out the Riverhawks in the second half, eventually tying the game 21-21 on a 42-yard field goal by Austin Ferencz with 8:22 to go. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, kicked field goals in the second OT. Steele Isaacs’ 8-yard TD run in the third OT won it for Sumner, sending coach Keith Ross to his first state title game in 27 seasons at Sumner. Sumner’s lone loss was to West Linn 34-27 in Week 3, but the Spartans had several close wins (31-28 OT vs. Lake Stevens in Week 1, 17-14 vs. Puyallup in Week 5, 14-12 vs. Curtis in Week 7). The Spartans also completely shutdown Skyview in a 41-0 state quarterfinal win. Junior QB Nate Donavon has passed for 2,714 yards with 25 touchdowns. Sophomore Braylon Pope has 60 catches for 909 yards and two TDS and senior Carter Cocke has 49 catches for 731 yards and 11 TDs. Senior Isaacs is the leading rusher with 1,281 yards and 15 touchdowns. But the defense may be the Spartans’ strength, led by junior linebacker Dillon Titialii. For Camas, the Papermakers fell behind 13-0 to Gonzaga Prep and trailed 20-7 after three quarters. But three consecutive touchdown drives rallied Camas to victory, sending first-year head coach Adam Mathieson to his first state championship game in 17 seasons as a head coach (one with Ferndale, 15 with Mountain View, one with Camas). Although Camas is known for its passing attack, the Papermakers leaned heavily on its rushing attack to turn the tide against Gonzaga Prep. Titan Brody rushed for 102 yards on 15 carries. The ground attack setup senior quarterback Jake Davidson to deliver four touchdown passes. Davidson has completed 200 of 289 passes for 3,481 yards and 50 touchdowns this season. Chase McGee has been his top target with 68 catches for 1,332 yards and 19 touchdowns. Tight end Nikko Speer had 39 catches for 592 yards and seven touchdowns. Anthony Forner has 27 catches for 538 yards and eight touchdowns. Titan Brody has rushed for 898 yards and seven touchdowns. Like Sumner, Camas also has an outstanding defense led by edge rusher Luke Webb, a Washington State signee.
Prediction: Camas 27, Sumner 24
