Here are state first-round previews for high school football teams in Southwest Washington.
Curtis (6-4) vs. Camas (10-0)
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Doc Harris Stadium, 841 NE 22nd Ave., Camas
What: 4A state first-round game
Last week: Curtis beat Glacier Peak 28-0; Camas beat Stadium 56-3
Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)
Last meeting: First meeting.
Game notes: Curtis has been a bit of an enigma this season. The Vikings placed fourth in the South Puget Sound League and needed a crossover win against Bethel (24-20) to advance to the Week 10 playoffs. That win snapped a three-game losing streak for Curtis. The Vikings are 0-3 against teams in the 4A state field of 16 — losing to Emerald Ridge (7-0), Sumner (14-12) and Puyallup (49-35). They also fell to 3A state team Lakes (14-10). But they looked very good in a Week 10 playoff win over Glacier Peak last week. Curtis lost by two touchdowns to Puyallup a week after losing to No. 2 Sumner by two points. Camas is 1-0 against teams in the 4A state field — Skyview 24-14 — because the Papermakers did not play a 4A team in non-league play. They do have wins over 3A state teams Lincoln-Tacoma, Roosevelt and Monroe. Curtis plays best when its defense is playing well. That will be a challenge against a Camas team that has scored at least 33 points in every game this season but two. QB Jake Davidson kept piling up touchdown passes, throwing six last week against Stadium.
Prediction: Camas 35, Curtis 14
Bothell (5-4) vs. Skyview (7-3)
When: 2 p.m. Saturday
Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E. 40th St., Vancouver
What: 4A state first-round game.
Last week: Bothell beat Olympia 52-14; Skyview beat Juanita 33-0.
Livestream: Vancouver Public Schools YouTube channel.
Last meeting: Skyview 21, Bothell 7, Sept. 15, 2023.
Game notes: This playoff game marks the third consecutive year Bothell and Skyview have faced off. The two teams had a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023, with Skyview winning both meetings. Don’t get distracted by Bothell’s 5-4 mark. The Cougars played a tough schedule. They lost to two teams in the 4A state field of 16 — No. 4 Kennedy Catholic (22-6) and No. 8 Arlington (50-49) — as well as the 3A No. 1 seed Bellevue (35-3). Bothell was the top 4A team in the Kingco’s top competitive tier. However, none of the other 4A Kingco teams survived the Week 10 playoffs. However, Bothell rolled over Olympia, one of the few South Puget Sound League teams to lose in Week 10. Skyview, on the other hand, has three wins over 4A state round-of-16 teams — Graham Kapowsin (21-17), Puyallup (38-8) and Richland (21-14). The Storm also rolled in their Week 10 win, recording their third shutout in the past four games.
Prediction: Skyview 24, Bothell 17
