Week 10 Southwest Washington playoff prep football preview capsules, predictions and livestream links

We stumbled back a bit after a 9-4 week of picks, dropping our season mark to 107-29 (.787) on the season.

Now comes a bit more uncertainty with local teams playing out-of-area opponents in the state preliminary playoffs.

Sadly, EPS Sports and VPS Game Time are unable to broadcast games this week, meaning Evergreen and Skyview games will be dark unless last-minute alternates can be found.

Remember don’t fall for livestream scams. We see them each week on social media – Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. To be sure they are not scams, be sure they are livestreams on the NFHS Network (NFHSnetwork.com) or YouTube streams provided by the schools themselves or school district. N2 Media is another validated local livestream provider.

All livestream links listed here are validated.

Here are Week 10 preview caps for high school football teams in Southwest Washington from Castle Rock to White Salmon.

The Camas defense has not allowed an opponent to score more than 14 points in every game this season except one.

Prediction: Camas 48, Stadium 6

Juanita finished in a three-way tie for the Crest Division, the second-tier division made up of four 4A teams and two 3A teams. The Ravens opened the season 0-2 before winning six of their last seven. Last week was the first time in the last six games that the Skyview defense allowed more than 14 points in a game.

Prediction: Skyview 28, Juanita 14

Prediction: Evergreen 24, Stanwood 20

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Mercer Island 27, Kelso 26, Nov. 4, 2017

Game notes: Mercer Island comes in with a perfect 9-0 mark, yet the Islanders were sent on the road because they played in the Mountain Division, the third tier of four divisions of the Kingco Conference that consists of two 3A teams, three 4A teams and one 2A team. Mercer Island earned the playoff berth by knocking off Highline, the last place team in the second tier Crest division. Their non-conference wins came against teams with losing marks. Kelso’s two losses came to Evergreen and Bellarmine, both 3A playoff teams.

Prediction: Kelso 27, Mercer Island 20

Cedarcrest (6-3) vs. Woodland (7-2)

Woodland dropped its first two games to Kalama and La Center, 1A playoff teams before going 7-0 in the 2A GSHL. The Beavers’ defense notched two shutouts and held opponents to 15 points or fewer in five of seven league games.

Prediction: Woodland 20, Cedarcrest 12

Fife (6-3) vs. Ridgefield (8-1)

Game notes: Fife finished tied for third in the 2A South Puget Sound League. The Trojans have scored 30 points or more in every win this season, and was held to 19 or less in each loss. Ridgefield has leaned on its defense to win games, but last week the Spudders were unable to produce enough offense to win. The two teams have one common opponent. Fife beat Hockinson 48-7 in Week 1, while Ridgefield beat the Hawks 24-21 two weeks later.

Prediction: Fife 26, Ridgefield 14

Washougal (6-3) vs. Olympic (8-1)

Game notes: Olympic of Bremerton finished in a three-way tie for first in the 2A Olympic League with Bremerton and North Kitsap. The Trojans like to run the ball with Chace Webster and Riley McCoy each averaging more than 100 yards a game. McCoy also has record seven sacks. Washougal’s offense has become more dynamic since Elijah Franco, a standout on defense, has taken a bigger role on offense.

Prediction: Olympic 20, Washougal 13

Mark Morris (4-5) vs. West Valley-Spokane (9-0)

When: 3 p.m. Saturday

Where: West Valley HS, 8301 E Buckeye Ave., Spokane Valley

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: With Kenny Mullen leading the way with 232 yards rushing, Mark Morris stuck almost exclusively to the ground attack to beat R.A. Long last week and earn a Week 10 playoff berth. Now, the Monarchs will have to see if that approach works against an unbeaten West Valley team. Keeping up with the Eagles could be a challenge. West Valley averages 41 points a game.

Prediction: West Valley-Spokane 42, Mark Morris 12

Columbia River (3-6) vs. Franklin Pierce (9-0)

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Columbia River 51, Franklin Pierce 0, Oct. 3, 2003.

Game notes: Aeden Pena caught the lone touchdown, then converted the go-ahead PAT kick in the abbreviated 7-6 play-in win over Aberdeen. The Rapids’ reward for that win is taking a potent Franklin Pierce team. The Cardinals are allowing just eight points a game. Franklin Pierce’s average margin of victory is 52-8 this season.

Prediction: Franklin Pierce 48, Columbia River 6

Game notes: Chelan beat Cascade to advance to a Monday tiebreaker against College Place, which the Mountain Goats won. Chelan was routed by 1A playoff teams Cashmere and Omak. Seton Catholic is averaging 47 points a game while allowing just 10 points a game.

Prediction: Seton Catholic 48, Chelan 6

Game notes: King’s Way Christian finished tied for third in the Trico League. The Knights are playing their first playoff game since 2019. Ryan Charlton’s running game is the key to the Knights’ offense. Lynden Christian’s losses came to Vancouver Collegiate of British Columbia, top-ranked 2B team squad Okanogan, 2A Sehome before league rival Nooksack Valley.

Prediction: Lynden Christian 31, King’s Way Christian 16

Kalama (6-3) vs. King’s (6-3)

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Woolsey Stadium, King’s HS, Crista Lane N, Shoreline

What: 1A state preliminary playoff

Last week: Kalama lost to Castle Rock 14-12; King’s beat Granite Falls 32-6

Livestream: King’s High School Hudl account

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: Kalama stumbled into the postseason, losing its last three games that were decided on the field — the Chinooks won a game by forfeit in Week 7. All of those losses came without the services of quarterback Aiden Brown, who suffered a hamstring injury against Seton Catholic in Week 6. If Brown returns, the Chinooks are a dangerous Week 10 foe.  King’s opened the season with losses to 2A Orting and ranked 1A teams Cascade Christian and Nooksack Valley. The Knights then reeled off six straight wins, including over 1A playoff teams Elma, Rochester and Granite Falls, as well as 2A playoff team Olympic.

Prediction: King’s 30, Kalama 27

Cascade Christian has a 37-18 win over 1A playoff team King’s, but was also routed by 2B Onalaska 50-14. The Cougars’ loss last week to Life Christian dropped into second place in the 2A/1A Nisqually League.

Prediction: Cascade Christian 33, Castle Rock 14
