Week 2 2024-25 high school football previews, predictions and livestream links

We said that Week 1 predictions are often a 50-50 coin toss. Well, we went 8-7 on Friday night last week, then saved a bit of facing by hitting on both Saturday games to finish 10-7.

Now with a bit more information for Week 2, we expect to fare better.

Hudson’s Bay (0-1) vs. Heritage (1-0)

When: 4:30 p.m. Friday

Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver

What: Non-league game

Last week: Hudson’s Bay lost to Napavine 47-7; Heritage beat Fort Vancouver 43-7

Livestream: None.

Last meeting: Hudson’s Bay 31, Heritage 7 (Sept. 1, 2023)

Game notes: Hudson’s Bay managed only 11 passing yards on just six attempts despite falling behind 33-0 by halftime last week against Napavine. But the Eagles were playing shorthanded on the offensive line. With a run-heavy approach, Aqeel Bauman rushed for 62 yards and one TD, and A.J. Hatton rushed for 78 yards. Heritage snapped a 20-game losing streak last week. The Timberwolves had five plays of 51 yards or more. They will need to show they can also have sustained drives. Kahni Clark rushed for 254 yards and two TDs.

Prediction: Heritage 28, Hudson’s Bay 20. One team won 43-7; the other lost 47-7. How do you go against the team that won?

Union (0-1) vs. Woodinville (1-0)

When: 6 p.m. Friday

Where: Pop Keeney Stadium, 9809 NE 188th St, Bothell

What: Non-league game

Last week: Union lost to Evergreen 18-0; Woodinville beat Ganesha (Calif.) 58-7.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Woodinville 21, Union 9 (Nov. 19, 2011)

Game notes: Union QB Blake McDonald completed 20 of 29 passes, but only 127 yards as the Titans stuck mainly to short passes. And the running game managed only 16 net yards. Now, they have travel into the heart of the KingCo Conference to play a Woodinville team that traveled to Southern California and routed Ganesha in Pomona. Not a great matchup to get the Titans on track.

Prediction: Woodinville 41, Union 10. The Titans are working to get better, but this is a tough matchup.

Hoquiam (0-1) vs. King’s Way Christian (1-0)

When: 6 p.m. Friday

Where: Preece Memorial Stadium, King’s Way Christian Schools, 3606 NE 78th St, Vancouver

What: Non-league game

Last week: Hoquiam lost to Columbia-White Salmon 16-13; King’s Way Christian beat Rochester 14-7.

Livestream: King’s Way Christian Schools YouTube channel.

Last meeting: Hoquiam 62, King’s Way Christian 29 (Nov. 4, 2016)

Game notes: Ryan Charlton rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown to lead the Knights’ to a Week 1 win. And the defense came up with a game-saving goal-line stand late. Hoquiam led Columbia-White Salmon 13-9 in the fourth quarter before giving up a decisive 50-yard TD run. The Grizzlies had another chance to take the lead by an end-zone interception ended those hopes.

Prediction: King’s Way Christian 21, Hoquiam 16. Charlton led the way in Week 1. Look for other Knights to step up in Week 2.

Battle Ground (1-0) vs. Mountain View (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: McKenzie Stadium, Evergreen HS, 2211 NE 138th Ave., Vancouver

What: Non-league game

Last week: Battle Ground beat Eisenhower 37-30; Mountain View lost to Washougal 8-6.

Livestream: None.

Last meeting: Mountain View 34, Battle Ground (Oct. 21, 2022)

Game notes: Battle Ground made the big plays to rally past Eisenhower last week. QB Ethan Adams accounted for 312 of the Tigers’ 336 total yards last week, passing for 236 yards and rushing for 76. Owen Mereen was a favorite target with five catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Mountain View leaned heavily on Jaden Brown, who accounted for 120 of the Thunder’s 174 yards on offense. He rushed for 87 yards and had six catches for 32 yards. But the Mountain View defense held Washougal to 132 yards. But three interceptions thrown by the Thunder hurt them.

Prediction: Mountain View 20, Battle Ground 17. If Thunder can contain Ethan Adams, they should be able to power their way to victory.

Graham-Kapowsin (0-1) vs. Skyview (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, 800 E 40th St, Vancouver

What: Non-league game

Last week: Graham-Kapowsin lost to O’Dea 35-28; Skyview beat Radford (Hawaii) 34-27

Livestream: None.

Last meeting: Graham-Kapowsin 42, Skyview 28 (Nov. 12, 2022)

Game notes: Graham-Kapowsin lost last week in heartbreaking fashion. QB AJ Tuivaiave had the ball stripped out of his grip and returned 34 yards for a touchdown with just four seconds to play. Tuivaiave passed for 347 yards and three TDs, but also two interceptions. Kris Norris caught six passes for 170 yards and two TDs. The last time Skyview played G-K, Gavin Packer had a huge game. Now a senior, Packer had eight catches for 159 yards and two TDs last week. James Poindexter passed for 301 yards and four TDs as the Storm rallied to win.

Prediction: Graham-Kapowsin 37, Skyview 31. Should be a wild one at Kiggins Bowl. Maybe a playoff preview.

Evergreen (1-0) vs. Puyallup (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Sparks Stadium, 601 7th Ave SW, Puyallup

What: Non-league game

Last week: Evergreen beat Union 18-0; Puyallup lost to Tumwater 56-6.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required) Eli Sports Network

Last meeting: First meeting

Game notes: Evergreen coach said last week Puyallup is loaded. But the Vikings must have been firing blanks last week at Tumwater. That game finished in the second half with a running clock as the 2A Thunderbirds led 49-6. Evergreen’s defense was outstanding in Week 1 shutout of Union. The offense made a couple of big plays, but struggled with consistency.  Half of their offense came on two plays. They had a 93-yard pass play to set up one touchdown, and had a 64-yard TD run by James Bethune.

Prediction: Evergreen 17, Puyallup 7. Plainsmen will rely again heavily on their defense, and the defense responds.

Camas (1-0) vs. Clackamas, Ore. (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Anderson Field, Clackamas HS, 14486 SE 122nd Ave, Clackamas, Ore.

What: Non-league game

Last week: Camas beat Roosevelt (Seattle) 12-6; Clackamas beat Ida B. Wells 27-16.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Clackamas 38, Camas 30 (Sept. 10, 2021)

Game notes: Camas’ offensive numbers were not spectacular last week against Roosevelt of Seattle. But coach Adam Mathieson believes the Roughriders have one of the best defenses in the state. He would not be surprised to see Roosevelt make a deep run in the 3A state playoffs. But the Papermaker defense was equal to the challenge and kept the Roughriders offense from scoring. Roosevelt’s lone touchdown came on special teams. Clackamas is coming off a 7-5 season in which the Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals of the Columbia Cup, Oregon’s secondary state tournament (think NIT for high school football).

Prediction: Camas 28, Clackamas 10. Papermakers ready to break out the offense in Week 2.

River Ridge (1-0) vs. Kelso (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Schroeder Field, Kelso HS, 1904 Allen St, Kelso

What: Non-league game

Last week: River Ridge beat Shelton 51-7; Kelso beat Mark Morris 44-12.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Kelso 56, River Ridge 26 (Nov. 5, 2004)

Game notes: This game figures to be an early season test to see how Kelso matches up against new 3A Greater St. Helens League rival Shelton. The Highclimbers were pounded by River Ridge last week. Kelso RB Aden Mintonye rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns and Tucker Amrine passed for 113 yards as the Hilanders took the gas off the pedal after opening a big lead against Mark Morris.

Prediction: Kelso 31, River Ridge 21. Mintonye and Amrine too much for the Hawks.

Prairie (0-1) vs. Washougal (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Fishback Stadium, Washougal HS, 1201 39th St, Washougal

What: Non-league game

Last week: Prairie lost to Ridgefield 48-7; Washougal beat Mountain View 8-6.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Prairie 36, Washougal 6 (Sept. 13, 2019)

Game notes: Mistakes got the season off to a poor start for Prairie. The Falcons gave us two first-quarter touchdowns by allowing Ridgefield to recover a bad snap and a fumble in the end zone. Prairie also struggled to run the ball. The Falcons’ leading rusher was backup Deven Vigue, with 71 yards. Washougal’s offense did not dazzle, posting only 132 yards. But the defense shined, led by three interceptions from Elijah Franco.

Prediction: Washougal 26, Prairie 13. The Panthers are one of only two 2A Greater St. Helens League teams to win in Week 1. Now they have a chance to enter league play 2-0.

Columbia River (0-1) vs. Columbia-White Salmon (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Bruin Stadium, Columbia HS, 1455 NW Bruin Country Rd, White Salmon

What: Non-league game

Last week: Columbia River lost to Seton Catholic 56-7; Columbia-White Salmon beat Hoquiam 16-13.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Columbia-White Salmon 32, Columbia River 25 (Nov. 1, 1963)

Game notes: Job No. 1 for Columbia River – keep better care of the ball. Four interceptions negated any good things the Rapids did last week on offense. Wongani Schlegel was a workhorse last week for Columbia-White Salmon, rushing for 190 yards on 30 carries – including a go-ahead 50-yard touchdown run late. The Bruins won despite losing two fumbles and two interceptions.

Prediction: Columbia River 32, Columbia-White Salmon 25. Rapids get their revenge for that 1963 loss to the Bruins.

Seton Catholic (1-0) vs. Mark Morris (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Longview Memorial Stadium, R.A. Long HS, 2903 Nichols Blvd, Longview

What: Non-league game

Last week: Seton Catholic beat Columbia River 56-7; Mark Morris lost to Kelso 44-12.

Livestream: N2 Media YouTube channel.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: Seton Catholic looked every bit as good as advertised. The Cougars picked up right where they left off in 2024. Seton got four interceptions on defense and Kolten Gesser passed for 212 yards. The Mike Peck era at Mark Morris got off to a bumpy start. Nathan Stephens passed for 115 yards and rushed for 107.

Prediction: Seton Catholic 42, Mark Morris 14. Cougars keep on rolling right into league play.

Hockinson (0-1) vs. Mount Baker (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Bob Tisdale Field, Mt. Baker HS, 4936 Deming Rd, Deming

What: Non-league game

Last week: Hockinson lost to Fife 48-7; Mount Baker beat Peninsula 49-22

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: Hockinson could not get much going on offense against Fife. The Hawks gained 154 yards on offense, but 69 came on Xavier Maitland’s touchdown run in the second quarter. It won’t get much easier this week, as the Hawks make the long road trip to just south of the Canadian border to play Mount Baker in Deming. The Mountaineers rolled over 2A Port Angeles in Week 1.

Prediction: Mount Baker 36, Hockinson 13. It’s a long road trip up north the Hawks. Even longer on the way back.

R.A. Long (0-1) vs. Centralia (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Centralia Tigers Stadium, Fort Borst Park, Centralia

What: Non-league game

Last week: R.A. Long lost to Castle Rock 34-8; Centralia lost to Elma 34-20

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: R.A. Long 54, Centralia 21 (Sept. 1, 2017)

Game notes: Job No. 1 for the Lumberjacks – stop giving the ball away. R.A. Long fumbled on their second play from scrimmage against Castle Rock, again on their third, threw a pick-six on their eighth. In total, they had six turnovers, two leading directly for touchdowns. R.A. Long had only eight first downs. Likewise, Centralia struggled to get much started against Elma, only getting nine first downs and completing just four passes.

Prediction: R.A. Long 19, Centralia 12. Two teams looking for something good. Lumberjacks have good players, if they can eliminate the mistakes.

Montesano (0-1) vs. Ridgefield (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Ridgefield Stadium, Ridgefield HS, 2630 Hillhurst Rd, Ridgefield

What: Non-league game

Last week: Montesano lost to La Center 35-7; Ridgefield beat Prairie 48-7.

Livestream: Ridgefield Athletics YouTube channel

Last meeting: Montesano 55, Ridgefield 0 (Nov. 4, 2011)

Game notes: Montesano appeared to be opening its season well, driving deep into La Center territory. But a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown turned things rapidly and they never came back. Now the Bulldogs need to regroup quickly against a Ridgefield team that looked good in Week 1. Landon DeBeaumont completed 11 for 14 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Cly Stephens rushed for 96 and one touchdown.

Prediction: Ridgefield 31, Montesano 13. The Spudders can’t expect to get a pair of gift touchdowns again. They’ll have to do it the old-fashioned way in Week 2.

La Center (1-0) vs. Woodland (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Beaver Stadium, Woodland HS, 1500 Dike Access Rd, Woodland

What: Non-league game

Last week: La Center beat Montesano 35-7; Woodland lost to Kalama 34-15.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: La Center 24, Woodland 8 (Sept. 8, 2023)

Game notes: Wyatt Eiesland shined in his first start at quarterback after playing center last season for the Wildcats. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw one TD to Houston Coyle. Eiesland also returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown. Elijah Andersen got the start at QB for Woodland and rushed for 103 yards and one touchdown. He passed for 61 yards and a score. But the Beavers struggled to stop big plays from Kalama. That figures to be a challenge this week.

Prediction: La Center 31, Woodland 13. The Beavers look to get better, but another tough Trico matchup won’t help much.

Rochester (0-1) vs. Castle Rock (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Rocket Stadium, Castle Rock HS, 5180 Westside Hwy, Castle Rock

What: Non-league game

Last week: Rochester lost to King’s Way Christian 14-6; Castle Rock beat R.A. Long 34-8.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Castle Rock 34, Rochester 0 (Sept. 2, 2011)

Game notes: Rochester got stopped at the goal-line trying to score a potential game-tying touchdown late against King’s Way Christian. The Warriors will run, run, run and run the ball some more. Castle Rock really never got to really stretch their legs much on offense last week, as the defense produced six turnovers, including two they converted directly into touchdowns. But the Rockets got a lot of players on the field, building depth for later in the year.

Prediction: Castle Rock 22, Rochester 6. Rockets got off to a fast start last week. They keep it roaring in Week 2.

Elma (1-0) vs. Stevenson (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Stevenson High Stadium, Stevenson HS, 390 NW Gropper Rd, Stevenson

What: Non-league game

Last week: Elma beat Centralia 34-20; Stevenson beat Rainier (Ore.) 48-16.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: Elma 49, Stevenson 22 (Oct. 30, 1998)

Game notes: Elma opened the season with a solid win over 2A Centralia, holding the Tigers to just nine first downs. Stevenson had a solid Week 1 win that should boost the confidence of a young roster.

Prediction: Elma 27, Stevenson 20. A little bit of a shot in the dark here. Don’t know much about either team. Hope to learn more this week.

Fort Vancouver (0-1) vs. Toutle Lake (0-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Toutle Lake High Stadium, Toutle Lake HS, 5050 Spirit Lake Hwy, Toutle

What: Non-league game

Last week: Fort Vancouver lost to Heritage 43-7; Toutle Lake lost to Ilwaco 16-6.

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: There were good things that came out of Week 1 for Fort Vancouver. Caleb Hyde passed for 137 yards and rushed for 39 yards. But most of the success the Trappers had came from getting outside. They struggled between the tackles. Toutle Lake struggled to find success with a revamped offense under first-year coach Jacob Green. Week 2 provides an opportunity to get better.

Prediction: Fort Vancouver 20, Toutle Lake 12. Facing 3A Heritage didn’t work for the Trappers. Better luck against the 2B Ducks.

Kalama (1-0) vs. Tenino (1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Tenino Beaver Stadium, Tenino HS, 500 W. 2nd Ave, Tenino

Livestream: None.

Last meeting: Kalama 41, Tenino 6, Sept. 18, 2009.

Game notes: Aidan Brown sparked Kalama in Week 1. The senior passed for 175 yards and rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns. Tenino was led by sophomore quarterback Mason Medcalf. His favorite target was 6-foot-6 tight end Jack Burkhardt.

Prediction: Kalama 37, Tenino 20. Brown keeps Chinook rolling toward Trico League opener next week.
