State quarterfinal football preview capsules, predications and livestream links

First-round of state did not go very well for us. We went 28-0 in the previous two weeks combined. But last week, we went 3-5.

That dropped us to 135-27 (83.3 percent).

This week’s playoff games will have livestream broadcasts, either free or for a fee. But fans should be aware of scammers using fake links to livestreams to lure in fans. All livestream links here are verified.

Kalama (8-3) vs. Onalaska (8-2)

CLASS 2B STATE QUARTERFINAL

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Tenino High School.

Livestream: NFHS Network/Eli Sports Network (subscription required)

Last week: Kalama beat Friday Harbor 32-14; Onalaska was idle.

Last meeting: Kalama 44, Onalaska 36 (Oct. 6, 2023)

Game notes: Kalama is the No. 5 seed; Onalaska is the No. 4 seed. The winner will face River View or Napavine in the semifinals. These two teams met in a wild one on Oct. 6, when Kalama quarterback Aiden Brown and Onalaska’s Kayden Monzingo trading big play after big play. Brown’s 3-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds left proved the difference for Kalama. That gave the Chinooks the South Division title. And yet, the WIAA seeding committee put Onalaska at the No. 4 seed ahead of Kalama at No. 5. That has been a rallying point for the Chinooks heading into this rematch. But revenge for a previous loss or for a slight from the seeding committee won’t decide this game. Likely a more decisive factor will be which team can stop the other. In the previous meeting, Brown threw four interceptions, and Onalaska lost two fumbles.

Prediction: Kalama 37, Onalaska 29

Skyview (10-1) vs. Eastlake (10-1)

CLASS 4A STATE QUARTERFINAL

When: 4 p.m. Saturday

Where: Eastlake HS, Sammamish

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last week: Skyview beat Skyline 42-7; Eastlake beat Sumner 21-18.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: Skyview is the No. 5 seed; Eastlake is the No. 4 seed. The winner will face Gonzaga Prep or Graham-Kapowsin in the semifinals. The Storm and Wolves have three common opponents this season. Eastlake beat Skyline 9-6, Bothell 14-7 and Kentwood 56-7. Skyview beat Skyline 42-7, Bothell 21-7 and Kentwood 56-0. Eastlake’s lone loss came to Lake Stevens (35-27), the No 2 seed in Class 4A. Skyview’s loss came to Camas (21-9), the No. 3 seed. However, Camas was eliminated last week by Mount Si, a KingCo Conference rival of Eastlake. Eight of Eastlake’s 11 games have been decided by 10 points or fewer, so the Wolves are battle-tested in close games. If this game is close late, the edge goes to Eastlake. But Skyview has avoided close games with an explosive offense and a defense that has held nine of 11 opponents to 10 points or fewer.

Prediction: Skyview 31, Eastlake 24

Seton Catholic (10-1) vs. Cashmere (11-0)

CLASS 1A STATE QUARTERFINAL

When: 4 p.m. Saturday

Where: Apple Bowl, Wenatchee

Livestream: TBD

Last week: Seton Catholic beat King’s 56-48; Cashmere beat Toppenish 49-14.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Game notes: Seton Catholic is the No. 12 seed; Cashmere is the No. 4 seed. The winner faces Omak or Royal in the state semifinals. Comparing scores and opponents won’t work for this matchup, as Cashmere has played only teams east of the Cascades, while Seton Catholic has only played teams west of the Cascades or from the Columbia River Gorge. But Cashmere has been dominant over the past four weeks, beating opponents by an average of 51-7. The Bulldogs’ last close game was a 28-21 win over Omak, the team that eliminated Trico League champion La Center last week. Seton Catholic has averaged 55 points over its last four games. But the Cougars will need to tighten up its defense against a big Cashmere lineup, because the Bulldogs’ defense will be difficult to pile up points against. Cashmere has allowed 8.4 points a game all season. Seton Catholic has one senior on the roster. Cashmere has 13, led by Trae Smith, who rushed for 220 yards and seven touchdowns last week.

Prediction: Cashmere 35, Seton Catholic 22
