Week 5 prep football preview capsules, plus predictions and livestream links

Fans of Hudson’s Bay and Columbia River were too impressed with our predictions last week. Turns out, those were the only two we got wrong. We went 14-2 last, moving our season total to 58-12 (82.9 percent).

So if we pick your favorite team to lose, mathematically, there is a 1 in 5 chance we could get it wrong. Actually, a little less.

Many schools offer livestream broadcasts of their home games, either free or for a fee. But fans should be aware of scammers using fake links to livestreams to lure in fans. All livestream links here are verified.

For schools that broadcast games on the NFHS Network, a subscription is required to watch games. Subscriptions cost $11.99 a month, or $79.99 a year.

Prediction: Coeur d’Alene 27, Union 20

Last week: Mountain View beat Hanford 37-31; Evergreen lost to Glacier Peak 21-0.

Last meeting: Evergreen 20, Mountain View 14 (2022).

Game notes: This could be one of the best games of Week 5. And even though it is the league opener for both teams, the result could prove decisive in determining a league champion or playoff team. Evergreen got a thrilling win last season in this rivalry with a big defensive stop late. The Plainsmen will need more from their offense this week after getting shut out for the first time in seven years last week.

Prediction: Mountain View 28, Evergreen 21

Game notes: Kelso might have played its best game of the season despite losing to Camas last week. Easton Marshall caught seven passes for 165 yards and one touchdown. Prairie is trying to avoid its first 0-5 start, in a non-COVID season, since 2016.

Prediction: Kelso 31, Prairie 13

Ridgefield (2-2, 1-1) vs. Washougal (3-1, 1-1)

2A GREATER ST. HELENS LEAGUE GAME

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Fishback Stadium, Washougal HS

Livestream: None

Last week: Ridgefield lost to Hudson’s Bay 28-24; Washougal beat Mark Morris 48-14

Last meeting: Washougal 34, Ridgefield 27 (2022).

Game notes: Cly Stephens had a big game last week, rushing for 163 yards and one touchdown. The Spudders’ ground attack may play a key role in keeping the ball away from Holden Bea and Washougal’s potent offense. Jayson Graham’s late interception for a touchdown led Washougal to a win at Ridgefield last season.

Prediction: Washougal 31, Ridgefield 24

Hockinson (1-3, 0-1) vs. Woodland (2-2, 1-1)

2A GREATER ST. HELENS LEAGUE GAME

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Beaver Stadium, Woodland High School

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last week: Hockinson beat R.A. Long 30-22; Woodland lost to Columbia River 26-20

Last meeting: Woodland 29, Hockinson 27 (2022).

Game notes: Hockinson attempted 41 passes last week with no interceptions last week against R.A. Long, and that was pivotal in getting the Hawks their first win. Carter Cameron caught 12 passes for 112 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Elijah Andersen got held in check last week by Columbia River, so the Beavers will need other options to step up to keep defense off of Andersen.

Prediction: Woodland 36, Hockinson 14

Mark Morris (2-2, 1-1) vs. Hudson’s Bay (4-0, 2-0)

2A GREATER ST. HELENS LEAGUE GAME

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Kiggins Bowl, Discovery MS, Vancouver

Livestream: None.

Last week: Mark Morris lost to Washougal 48-14; Hudson’s Bay beat Ridgefield 28-24.

Last meeting: Mark Morris 50, Hudson’s Bay 13 (2022).

Game notes: Mark Morris has allowed just three total points in its two wins, but 91 in the Monarchs’ two losses. That’s important when the offense has averaged 14 points a game. The Monarchs will be charged with trying to slow down the potent running game of Hudson’s Bay, led by running backs Rafael and Aqeel Bauman. The Eagles need to make sure not to look past the Monarchs with Washougal and Woodland looming on the schedule.

Prediction: Hudson’s Bay 31, Mark Morris 12

Columbia River (1-3, 1-1) vs. R.A. Long (1-3, 0-2)

2A GREATER ST. HELENS LEAGUE GAME

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Longview Memorial Stadium, Longview

Livestream: N2 Media YouTube channel

Last week: Columbia River beat Woodland 26-20; R.A. Long lost to Hockinson 30-22.

Last meeting: Columbia River 28, R.A. Long 7 (2022).

Game notes: Columbia River got healthier last week and the Rapids showed that they can be a dangerous team in the 2A GSHL. Ethan Long threw for 288 yards. Chris Parkin was a workhorse on the ground, carrying the ball 22 times. R.A. Long came close to erasing a 30-0 halftime deficit last week at Hockinson and Nicholas Niday and Koynn Williamdyke sparked the comeback. The last time R.A. Long beat River was in 1978, then the two schools didn’t meet again until 1999. Since then, River has won the last 16 meetings.

Prediction: Columbia River 23, R.A. Long 13

Fort Vancouver (1-3, 0-1) vs. Castle Rock (1-3, 0-0)

Livestream: NFHS Network (subscription required)

Last week: Fort Vancouver lost to The Dalles 15-8; Castle Rock lost to Montesano 35-7

Last meeting: Castle Rock 47, Fort Vancouver 25 (2022).

Game notes: After a rough non-league campaign, the Rockets look to get on the right path to contend in the Trico League. Fort Vancouver’s offense has struggled to produce points in the past two weeks, scoring just eight. The Trappers took an 8-0 first quarter lead last week before falling to The Dalles. .

Prediction: Castle Rock 27, Fort Vancouver 6

Prediction: Seton Catholic 45, Columbia-White Salmon 6.

Last week: King’s Way Christian lost to Kalama 48-14; La Center beat Connell 41-28

Last meeting: La Center 46, King’s Way Christian 0 (2022).

Game notes: Houston Coyle has filled in very well since taking over at quarterback. He rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another last week at Connell. The defense also has played well, shutting down a Kalama team that put 48 on King’s Way Christian last week. Ryan Charlton rushed for 121 yards last week.

Prediction: La Center 48, King’s Way Christian 6

Kalama (2-2) vs. Stevenson (3-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last meeting: Kalama 30, Stevenson 20 (2022).

Game notes: The glow of Stevenson’s 3-0 start got dimmed quickly last week. Now the Bulldogs’ defense, which played so well in the opening three weeks, will be put to the test by Kalama, led by junior quarterback Aiden Brown, who passed for 203 yards and rushed for 142 last week.

Prediction: Kalama 34, Stevenson 14

Battle Ground (4-0) vs. Mt. Tahoma (2-2)

When: 1 p.m. Saturday

Last meeting: Mount Tahoma 54, Battle Ground 41 (2022).

Game notes: Battle Ground has four lopsided wins, the last two over a pair of winless opponents. This one will be a bigger test for the Tigers. Mount Tahoma is 2-2, but the Thunderbirds have won back-to-back games after opening with a 24-21 loss to North Kitsap, the No. 7 Class 2A team and 35-28 loss to Eastlake, the No. 7 4A team.

Prediction: Battle Ground 30, Mount Tahoma 27
