Columbian’s first high school basketball state rankings of 2017

I was working on my first ballot for the initial Associated Press media state high school basketball rankings, thinking the first votes were due this Wednesday.

As it turns out, the first balloting will take place next week.

So I thought I’d share how I would have voted if the balloting take place, and then call them “The Columbian’s high school basketball state rankings” so that they would appear more official.

Every media outlet in the state is invited to participate in these rankings. But generally about 10 to 12 usually vote. I handle the voting for The Columbian.

I can votes in all classifications from 4A to 1A. I pass on 2B and 1B for a couple of reasons.

For one, we don’t have any 2B schools in The Columbian coverage area, and only about three at 1B. And those small handful of local 1B schools rarely play teams from outside of their own district, which makes me a very uninformed voter in those classifications.

As such, I abstain from voting there. So, here are the Week 1 Columbian state basketball rankings.
