River’s Evenson, Hockinson’s De La Torre earn state honors
A pair of Clark County athletes were selected state athletes of the week by the WIAA this week.
Columbia River football player Gabe Evenson was the 3A boys state player of the week, while Hockinson golfer Diego De La Torre was the 2A boys state player of the week.
Evenson led his team to a 43-14 victory over Prairie by throwing a school record five touchdowns. He passed for 316 yards on 22 completions out of 33 attempts.
De La Torre shot rounds of 73 and 72 for a total score of 145 to win the 2A District 4 championship by seven strokes, at Mint Valley course in Longview. He successful defended his title from last year.
Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes twelve varsity athletes, a male and a female from each of the six classifications, who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week. The weekly deadline is Tuesday before noon. All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA State Athlete of the Week Award. Students may win the WIAA State Athlete of the Week Award once during any given academic year. Each winner of the WIAA State Athlete of the Week Award will receive a letter of recognition from the WIAA Executive Director, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week T-Shirt and certificate.
