Rating the area’s top athletic programs of 2013-14 based on state finishes

As we enter into the spring sports postseason, we thought we’d take at the most successful sports programs in the region based on their placing at state meets and tournaments during the 2013-14 school year.

This is based on a 16-15-14-etc scoring system. In other words, teams gets 16 points for placing first at state, 15 for second and so on.

You don’t have to win a trophy to get a point. Teams that advance to state tournament score points. In football, semifinal losers split points for third and fourth place (13.5 each), quarterfinal losers split points for places 5th-8th) (10.5), first-round losers split points for places (9th-16th) (4.5).

Here are the standings through the end of the winter seasons (with number of sports advancing to final 16 at state in parenthesis).

Lots can change in spring with championships in nine sports being decided.
