Washington Athletes Star At World Youth Championships

Alexa Efraimson of Camas won a bronze medal in the girls 1,500 meters Saturday at the World Youth Track and Field Championships, and you can read about it here. Meanwhile, another athlete from Washington — Hannah Cunliffe of Federal Way — qualified for the final in the girls 200. Cunliffe has a fascinating story, and you can read about it here.

Cunliffe, you see, is one of the best sprinters in the country. But she didn’t get to run at the state high school championships because of a convoluted mess involving transfer rules and home-schooling and court proceedings. I don’t know whether the final court ruling was correct or not, but it’s definitely convoluted.

As for Efraimson, she finished behind two Ethiopians and was thrilled with a bronze medal: “It feels amazing to be on the podium. Even being here is humbling, so to get on the podium is even better.”
