Athlete of the week nominees 5/28
Nominees for The Columbian’s high school athlete of the week for the week of May 20-25:
Chloe Bartek, Columbia River, girls golf: Chloe capped her impressive high school career with her first state championship, winning the Class 3A girls tournament at Lewis River Golf Course by seven strokes.
Alexa Efraimson, Camas, girls track and field: Another big meet, another impressive performance for Efraimson. She won the Class 4A 1,600 with a state meet record of 4 minutes, 39.25 seconds, which is the fastest time in the country this season. Efraimson would also add the 800 title, also with a state meet record of 2 minutes, 8.17 seconds.
Ian Hamilton, Skyview, baseball: Hamilton, the ace of the staff, pitched a shutout in the semifinals, striking out 10 in what turned into a five-inning game. Hamilton then went 3 for 4 and drove in a run in the championship game, giving him five hits and two RBIs in the two games in Pasco. Skyview won its first state title in baseball.
Sammi Hampton, Skyview, girls tennis: Hampton, a sophomore, shook off an arm injury and defended her state singles title. She lost the first set in the 4A championship, then responded with 6-0, 6-3 victories in the final two sets. She also was part of Skyview’s first team championship.
Brian Humphreys, Camas, boys golf: Humphreys, a freshman, won the Class 4A boys title at Camas Meadows Golf Course. One of five players who were tied for the lead after the first round. Humphreys then recorded the lowest score of the second round and won by two strokes.
Peter Zalk, Prairie, boys track and field: Zalk won the Class 3A state title in the 110 high hurdles. Earlier in the meet, he tied for fifth in the pole vault. Those points helped Prairie to a third-place finish in the team standings.
