Prairie girls basketball has a new coach

Stop if you’ve heard this one before:

The Prairie Falcons have hired a girls basketball coach. And for the second year in a row, they selected a coach who was working with the boys basketball program.

The school announced Friday that Brett Johnson, an assistant with the boys program, will take over as the head coach of the girls team.

Johnson will take over for Mike Smith, who resigned after one season. Smith took over for Al Aldridge, who led Prairie to six state championships and 12 state championship games.

Prairie reached the round of 16 among all Class 3A state teams this winter but failed to make the state tournament for the first time since 1997.

A call to Johnson was not immediately returned Friday evening. We hope to have comments from him soon.
