Athlete of the Week nominees 5/6
Nominees for The Columbian’s high school athlete of the week for the week of April 29-May 4:
Akari Baba, Prairie tennis: Baba won the Class 3A District 4 singles title. She has been dominating the league all season. Akari won a state doubles title last year with her sister Shiori. Now that Shiori is graduated, Akari is looking to go to state in singles.
Anthony Dizon, Woodland soccer: Dizon scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over Stevenson in a Trico League tiebreaker match that advanced the Beavers to the district tournament. Then Dizon scored a goal Saturday in the opening round of the tournament. The 2-1 win over Elma was the first district playoff win for the soccer program since 2002.
Ian Hamilton, Skyview baseball: Hamilton struck out nine batters in six innings of work in the district championship game. He also went 3 for 3 at the plate, including a two-out, run-scoring, infield single in the Storm’s six-run seventh inning to beat Heritage 6-4.
Alicia Kwon, Union golf: Kwon shot a 41 on Wednesday to lead Union over Battle Ground, then a 43 on Thursday as the Titans completed an undefeated 4A GSHL schedule.
Katie Schroeder, Camas softball: Schroeder threw a perfect game against Union on Wednesday, striking out 14. She followed up that performance with a one-hitter Friday, striking out nine. She was perfect through four innings of that game, giving her 11 perfect innings in a row. With two games to play, the Papermakers have clinched the No. 1 seed from the 4A GSHL.
