Councilors Larry Smith and Jeanne Stewart, both of whom have indicated they may toss their hats in the mayoral race ring in 2013, are likely to have at least one challenger — Mayor Tim Leavitt.

Leavitt, when deciding not to run against Jaime Herrera Beutler this year for her Congressional seat, said it was very likely he’ll run to stay in his position at the center of the city council dais.

On Thursday, he said he’ll make that call for sure in the next six weeks.

Chances are “very good” that he’ll be making a re-election bid he said.

“There’s a lot of factors to weigh — personal life, career, accomplishments, finishing up some projects that we’ve started,” Leavitt said. “We’ve done a lot of great things in a challenging time.”

I asked him one of our editor Lou Brancaccio’s favorite questions: With a gun held to your head, what are the odds?

The best I could get, sans Walther PPK and with only the power of the blog? “Better than 50-50.”

Stay tuned.
