He won't back down

Update: Elections chief Tim Likness has informed us that primary losers cannot, we repeat, cannot, mount a write-in campaign. But Likness can stand us up at the gates of Hell but we won’t back down from this blog post, partly because it’s awesome and partly because we wasted so much time today singing Petty songs we need to show the editors that we do actually work.

You’ll see over on our main page that Vancouver City Councilor Pat Campbell, who lost to his two challengers in Tuesday’s primary, has announced a write-in campaign.

That got us to humming Tom Petty’s classic “I Won’t Back Down.”

The Petty-palooza of puns flowed from there (Traveling Wilburys classics included): Pat’s asking voters to “Don’t Do Me Like That” and allow him to be “Runnin’ Down a Dream” by writing him in.

Don’t choose that “American Girl” Anne McEnerny-Ogle, we’re sure he’s saying, or Bill Turlay.

Turlay, meanwhile, figures he’s “Heading for the Light” where he’ll be able to save us from the CRC “Poor House” – but only “If You Belonged to Me.” (You being Campbell’s seat.) Otherwise, it’s just a “Dirty World.”

Campbell’s feeling like a “Refugee” who’s been told “Don’t Come Around Here No More.”

“You Don’t Know How it Feels” to be “Free Fallin'” through the polls, and waiting for results on “Needles and Pins.”

“I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better,” he’s thinking, if voters have a “Change of Heart.”

Looks like Nov. 8 might be Patty C’s Last Dance?
