Kickball: It's not just for kids

A story about the dedication of the Luke Jensen Sports Park will be in Sunday’s newspaper, but limited space means we can’t run all the pictures Columbian photographer Steve Lane took at a celebrity kickball game that was played after the dedication.

The game was to raise money for the Dream Big Community Center. The Dream Team was captained by Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt, and Team BIG was captained by Big Stu, who apparently doesn’t like the nickname the meeting mavens use for him because on the back of his shirt he had … oh, I can’t bring myself to even write it. Look for yourself. He’s No. 19.

I refuse to write his nickname. Here’s Commissioner Steve Stuart putting his big neon green foot to the ball:

Stuart’s team all had nicknames — “Big C” is Charles Guthrie from Clark College, “Big Plans” is Mike Bomar from the Southwest Washington Contractors Association and “Big Z” is Ryan Zygar from Tamarack Homes. Other BIG players included “Big Fire,” Battle Ground City Councilor Mike Ciraulo of Clark County Fire & Rescue. Here’s Big Fire at the plate:

Team BIG lost, 4 to 2, to the nickname-less Dream Team. How can the Dream Team lose with Leavitt? Look, he can kick (nice overbite!)

And he can catch! (Or maybe he’s trying to tag Alishia Topper, “Big Top” from Fort Vancouver National Trust? Not sure. Let’s not think about Leavitt chasing women, and assume he caught the ball.)

OK, enough of Big Stu and Lil’ T. Let’s move on to an elected official we don’t often have in the blog, probably because he’s the only official who takes his gun to work. Here’s Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas, calling Michele Rudi of Thompson Metal Fab safe as she beats the throw to home (“Big Doug” is Doug Ballou, who serves on the Neighborhood Associations Council of Clark County.)
