Throwback Thursday: Brian Baird on the Colbert Report

Stephen Colbert once opened up a segment on his show called “Better Know a District” with a game of word association.

“I’ll say a word and you say the first thing that pops into your head. Ready? Congressman Brian Baird. Well, if you’re like me the first thing that came into your head was Washington’s 3rd Congressional District,” Colbert said.

Tonight the final episode of “The Colbert Report” will air.

Stephen Colbert will break character forever as he leaves the Comedy Central show to replace David Letterman on the late night show next year.

And like the Washington Post said, “he will be a new, unfamiliar Colbert – likely still hilarious but probably in a very different way.”

So before the old Colbert disappears, enjoy  a Throwback Thursday to the time Rep. Baird appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show in 2007; To when the funnyman asked a Congressman representing Southwest Washington in D.C. about his meth problem and whether he often “detaches from the rest of the world as if (he’s) not part of it?”

To be fair to Baird, the 100-minute taping was slashed to 5 minutes.

Colbert gets right to the point, noting Baird’s past as clinical psychologist. “You’re a congressman and a psychologist. How does that make you feel?”

In 2007, before the show had aired, Baird told The Columbian the funny man had done his homework.

“He knew about the Vancouver Sausage Festival,” Baird said. “It featured prominently in the interview. He knew about oysters and cranberries. He suggested at one point that we should genetically modify a cranberry and a human to make a cranman.”
