Herrera Beutler appears moderate in National Journal’s political philosophy ranking
When compared to other Republicans in Congress, U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, appears to vote in a more moderate fashion.
According to the nonpartisan National Journal magazine, based in Washington, D.C., Herrera Beutler ranks 222 on the conservative scale out of 435 lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives. That puts her in the 52nd percentile for conservative philosophy.
Only 17 other Republicans in the House are ranked as more liberal than Herrera Beutler. There are 242 Republicans in the House.
“Since Jaime took office, we’ve heard the consistent refrain from the Democratic attack machine that she is a ‘lockstep Republican,’ consistently voting the party line,” Herrera Beutler’s spokesman Casey Bowman said in a news release. “We’ve maintained all along that she puts the needs of her district above her party, and now we have independent proof.”
When the National Journal breaks it down further, Herrera Beutler is in the 48th percentile on the conservative scale when it comes to the economy, in the 55th percentile on social issues and in the 53rd percentile on foreign policy.
To create its ranking, the National Journal analyzed how each member of Congress voted in 2011. It has a similar list for U.S. senators.
