There’s a famous song of that title that says when the temperature gets too high, the impulse for romance goes way down. So here we are in what is an unusually hot week for our part of the country and I’m writing not only about romance but about cooking. Which is an even less appealing thing to do when it’s hot. But it’s what I said I’d do, so here I am.

Of course, I’m one of the lucky ones–I have air conditioning in my house and my car. As long as I don’t have to spend too much time outside the confines of either of those things, I’m fine. Or as the man in the parking lot said to me over the weekend, “I’m spending my day running from one air-conditioned place to another. How about you?” Amen, brother.

But like everyone else, I’m still looking at what I can do to keep comfortable. So what’s the plan for a romantic in a heat wave? Show your loved one lots of TLC by stocking up on cold things. Iced tea, mineral water, cold salads. Heavy foods full of fat and calories are off the menu for the moment.

That’s my plan for getting through the heat. What’s yours?
