Skyview’s Sammi Hampton commits to Arizona State

Three-time WIAA singles state champion Sammi Hampton, entering her senior year at Skyview High School, has verbally committed to play tennis at Arizona State. (National Letter of Intent signing day for spring sports is typically the middle of April.)

According to the website tennisrecruiting.net, Hampton made the decision over programs like Tennessee and Florida. She said it was her visit to the Pac-12 Conference program that made the decision easier.

“I really liked coach Sheila (McInerney) because she had such great energy and personality,” Hampton is quoted on the website. “I knew we’d get along great. Plus, I knew in making my decision that I wanted to go somewhere hot. I’m really excited about my choice because it’s a desert area with completely different scenery and weather than I’m used to.”

Hampton won singles and doubles title at the USTA Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional Championships for the second summer in a row. Since winning her third consecutive high school state singles title at the end of May, Hampton has won four singles titles and two doubles titles over the summer and was on the USTA Pacific Northwest team at the Girls 18s National Team Championships played at Claremont, Calif.

She has been named All-Region girls tennis player of the year three times by The Columbian sports staff.
