Athletes of the Week nominees 3/25

Nominees for The Columbian prep athlete of the week for the week of March 18-23.

Milla Benedetti and Emma Raivio, Mountain View tennis: The Thunder Invitational expanded to bring in top talent from beyond Southwest Washington, but Southwest Washington still ruled the Thunder Invitational. Benedetti and Raivio won the Flight 1 doubles title with a three-set thriller over a pair from Bainbridge Island.

Cody Hawken, Union baseball: Combined to go 5 for 6 with four doubles and a home run, while driving in six runs in a pair of victories. The Titans are off to a fast start, 6-0 overall with a 1-0 mark in the 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Carter Johnson, Skyview soccer: The defending state champions continue to look like champions. Undefeated so far in 2013. Johnson scored three goals against Ridgefield on Friday, his second consecutive three-goal match.

Devin Scott, Heritage boys track and field: Soared to a mark of 44 feet, 5.5 inches in the triple jump at the Tiger Invite. That’s the second-best mark in the state this season.

Aubrey Ward-El, Skyview girls track and field: More than a great basketball player, Ward-El won the Tiger Invite in the javelin with a throw of 126 feet, 11 inches. That’s in the top 10 in the state this early part of the season. She also won the shot put at 41-7.
