Prep athlete of the week nominees 1/14

Nominees for The Columbian’s prep athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 7-12. Athletes are limited to one nomination during the regular season.

SHAYLAN HAWTHORNE, COLUMBIA RIVER GYMNASTICS: Hawthorne won the vault (9.3) and the floor exercise (9.65) to finish third in the all-around (35.15) to help Columbia River win the team title at the Winterfest Invitational.

MILES LUKE, BATTLE GROUND BOYS BASKETBALL: Luke had 11 points and eight rebounds in a win over Skyview, then scored 23 points, including a key rebound basket late, in a win over Heritage.

RAMON ORTIZ, EVERGREEN BOYS WRESTLING: Ortiz dominated his weight class in winning the 126-pound division with two pins and wins by 18-3 and 16-1 at the Clark County Championships. Ortiz is ranked third in Class 4A at 126 pounds.

KASSI STRANO, BATLLE GROUND GIRLS WRESTLING: Strano, ranked third in the state at 106 pounds, won the 106-pound division at the Clark County Championships with a pin over sixth-ranked Quinn O’Bryant of Prairie.

KATIE WHITTEN, LA CENTER GIRLS BASKETBALL: Whitten had a rare double-double with 10 points and 10 steals in a win over King’s Way, then scored 24 points in a win over Toledo.
