Record day for locals at Centennial track meet

Sean Keller stole the spotlight, but there were many other Clark County athletes who shined at the Centennial Invitational track and field meet in Gresham, Ore., on Saturday.

Keller broke his own Washington state record in the javelin by 12 feet, winning the event Saturday with a mark of 244 feet, 1 inch.

Here are more details on Keller’s mark.

His previous state record was 232-1 set at the 2011 Centennial Invitational.

The national record for the boys javelin in a high school meet was 244-2, set by Gresham’s Sam Crouser at the 2010 Centennial Invitational. That mark broke at 22-year-old national record.’

Crouser then went to set the national record for the javelin by a high school athlete when he threw 255-4 in a Portland Throws Festival meet in June, after the high school season had concluded.

Keller had a national-best mark this season with his throw 230-7, which he accomplished in a season-opening meet in Battle Ground in March. Since then, his throws have ranged between 211-10 and 222-8.

That is, until Saturday.

“It didn’t feel like anything,” Keller told OregonLive.com. “They say some of your best throws, it feels like they never happened. I threw it, and I looked up and it wasn’t wobbling. It wasn’t sideways. It was perfect.”

Heritage’s next schedule meet in the Class 4A district championships at McKenzie Stadium on May 9.

But there were other local standouts at Saturday’s meet.

Camas freshman Alexa Efraimson set a state-best mark this season in the 800 meters with her winning time of 2 minutes, 8.92 seconds. That was only a second off the all-time state record by freshman girl, set by Deanna Coleman of Issaquah (2:07.9, set in 1977).

Efraimson now has the state-best mark for all classifications in the 800 and 1,600 this season.

Madison Lanford’s third-place time in the 300-meter hurdles of 44.55 now ranks the Skyview sophomore third in the state this season.

Skyview’s Taylor Barrus placed third in the girls javelin at 139-9. That mark now ranks her second in the state.

On the boys side, Union’s Tanner Sork won the 400 meters in 48.96, ranking him fifth in the state this season.

Other notable finishes included Heritage’s E’Lon Mack, who won the 100 and placed second in the 200; Union’s Joe Thompson won the boys pole vault at 15-0; Union’s Alexis Fuller was second in the 1,500 and third in the 3,000; Prairie’s Johna McEllrath placed third in the shot put and discus.
