Columbia River beats Evergreen in baseball

The Columbia River High School baseball team was supposed to open the spring sports season Friday by playing Battle Ground.

However, a snow day last week at Battle Ground cost the Tigers a practice and left them short of the WIAA-required 10 practice minimum before opening the season on Friday.

So the Evergreen Plainsmen stepped in to face the Chieftains.

And Battle Ground’s loss was Evergreen’s … loss.

Columbia River beat Evergreen 3-0 in the first regular-season event of the spring sports season.

Seth Reyburn and Michael Barnes combined on an eight-hit shutout. Austin Oury went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI for River, and Lucas Braafladt went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In a late-reporting results, Skyview beat Prairie in baseball 5-1.

Skyview’s David Garlington went 2 for 2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored.

Columbia River is scheduled to play again Saturday at R.A. Long, weather permitting. Heritage also is scheduled to play at Prairie, if the weather allows.

One Saturday event that won’t be rained out is the season opener for the Union boys soccer team. The Titans will host Eastlake of Sammamish, the 2011 Class 4A state champion, at 5 p.m. Saturday at McKenzie Stadium.
