State playoff quarterfinal football preview: Camas vs. Meadowdale

When, where: 5 p.m. Saturday at Doc Harris Stadium, Camas (3A state playoff). Radio/Webcast: None.

Last meeting: First meeting.

At stake: Berth in state semifinals against O’Dea/Capital winner

MEADOWDALE (11-0)

Last week: beat Mercer Island 20-17 in state first round.

Players to watch: QB Brian Marty (56-96, 852 passing, 13 TDs); RB Giavani Shepard (148-989 rushing, 9 TDs); RB Kyle Newsom (88-534 rushing, 17 TDs); WR Kyler Larson (15-390 receiving, 6 TDs); WR Ryan White (17-335 receiving, 2 TDs).

Notes: The Mavericks won the Wesco 3A with an 8-0 record. … Meadowdale was the only Wesco 3A team to make the state playoffs. … The Mavericks would rather run first, and pass when needed. … Meadowdale rushed for 301 yards in a 33-7 win over Prairie in the state preliminary round. … Meadowdale has been slowed by penalties the past two weeks. … The Mavs gave up 224 passing yards to Prairie’s Colin Seitz and were outgained by Mercer Island 396-285. … Marty was efficient against Mercer Island, completing 5 of 8 passes for 128 yards. … The Mavs led 20-3 in the third quarter before the Islanders rallied, scoring their final TD with 22 seconds left.

CAMAS (10-1)

Last week: beat Kennedy 48-14 in state first round.

Players to watch: QB Tony Gennaro (140-212, 2146 passing, 27 TDs), RB Zack Marshall (155-1107 rushing, 16 TDs; 27-362 receiving, 5 TDs); WR Jonathan Warner (43-587 receiving, 9 TDs); WR Zach Eagle (30-548 receiving, 6 TDs).

Notes: Last week’s 34-point win was the closest game Camas has played since beating Prairie 35-6 on Sept. 30. … The Papermakers’ lone loss was to Skyview, a team still alive in the 4A state quarterfinals. … Camas has not allowed a team to score more than 14 points or come within 14 points in any of its 10 wins. … Marshall was the offensive player of the year in the 3A GSHL; John Norcross of Camas was the defensive player of the year. … Marshall has 1,469 yards from scrimmage this season and 21 TDs. … This is the second consecutive year Camas has hosted a state quarterfinal at Doc Harris Stadium. … The Papermakers are trying to earn their first berth to the state semifinals.

Bottom line: Both of the teams are known for their defense. Yet, Meadowdale gave up nearly 400 yards of offense last week to a team that lost its UW-recruited QB in the second quarter. Mercer Island has 267 yards in the second half with a backup QB. If the Mavs give up that many yards to the Papermakers, it will not be close.
