Week 10 playoff football preview: Union vs. Tahoma
When, where: 7 p.m. Friday at McKenzie Stadium (Class 4A state preliminary game). Radio: None.
Last meeting: First meeting.
TAHOMA (6-3)
Last week: beat Mount Rainier 48-17.
Players to watch: QB Shane Nelson 97-174, 1404 yards, 10 TDs; RB Beau Riggs 99-537, 8 TDs; WR Jason Smith 44-678, 5 TDs.
Notes: The Bears from Covington placed tied for second in the South Puget Sound League North Division … Tahoma has not been to the state tournament since 2006. … The Bears have been a high-scoring team this season, scoring at least 33 points in eight of their nine games this season. … But they’ve also given up a lot of points, allowing foes to score 31 points or more four times.
UNION (7-2)
Last week: lost to Skyview 44-27.
Players to watch: QB Kaben Humphrey-Butler 74-122, 1167 yards, 7 TDs; RB Brandon Brody-Heim 84-508, 13 TDs; WR Tanner Nelson 23-438, 3 TDs
Notes: Union had a seven-game winning streak snapped last week. … Brody-Heim missed more than a month of the season after having knee surgery in September. … The 44 points surrendered to Skyview were more than what Union had given up in its previous five games combined.
Bottom line: The Titans must avoid the mistakes that allowed last week’s game vs. Skyview get away from them. None of the teams in Tahoma’s division are ranked by the Tacoma News Tribune.
Columbian’s pick: Union.
Fans’ pick: Union (95 percent).
