Week 8 football preview: Washougal vs. Mark Morris

When, where: 7 p.m. Friday at Longview Memorial Stadium (Class 2A Greater St. Helens League game).

Last meeting: Mark Morris won 50-13 on Oct. 22, 2010 in Washougal.

Last week: Washougal lost to Woodland 35-28 in 2 OT; Mark Morris lost to W.F. West 35-14

Washougal (6-1, 1-1): The Panthers’ march to the 2A GSHL title got derailed in the second half last week against Woodland. Washougal led 28-14 at halftime, but failed to score in the second half, including two overtime periods. … Sam O’Hara rushed for 131 yards last week, and Caleb Howard ran for 115. … QB Colton Sullivan passed for 127, but 74 came on one play. … The Panthers have scored at least 28 points in every game this season.

Mark Morris (2-5, 0-2): The Monarchs have lost four straight. … In all but two games, the Monarchs have failed to score more than 14 points. … Last week against W.F. West (a potential playoff team in the 2A Evergreen Conference), Mark Morris fell behind 35-0 by halftime. The Monarchs scored two TDs in the fourth quarter. … But Mark Morris’ 21-14 loss to Woodland and 14-13 loss to Hockinson make the Monarchs a dangerous opponent in the 2A GSHL.

Bottom line: If the Panthers aren’t careful, they could see their playoff hopes dashed in Longview. But if Washougal scores its average and holds Mark Morris to its scoring average, the Panthers will prevail.

Columbian’s pick: Washougal.
