Last meeting: Mark Morris won 24-21 on Sept. 10, 2010 in Longview.

Last week: Mark Morris beat Kelso 21-7; Heritage lost 48-0 to Issaquah.

Mark Morris (1-0): The Monarchs got off to a slow start against Kelso. They were held to 18 yards rushing and trailed 7-0 at halftime. But Mark Morris broke free for 234 yards after halftime. … RB Keegan Baker rushed for 99 yards, and Nikko Asbell added 83 as the Monarchs spread the ball around. … Mark Morris went 9-4 last season and reached the Class 2A semifinals.

Heritage (0-1): The Timberwolves struggled in their first game under coach Jack Hathaway. … Heritage surrendered three safety off miscues in the punting game. Two snaps went past the punter and out of the end zone. A third time, the punter was tackled in the end zone. … Unfortunately, Heritage was punting a lot against Issaquah, gaining only 97 yards of offense. … QB Joseph Cooper was the stat leader, passing for 72 yards and rushing for 26.

Bottom line: Mark Morris appears to be as good last year’s team. Heritage still has some work to do.
