Week 2 football preview: Columbia River vs. Kelso

When, where: 7 p.m. Friday at Schroeder Field, Kelso HS.

Last meeting: Kelso won 12-3 on Sept. 10, 2010 in Vancouver.

Last week: Columbia River beat Battle Ground 16-6; Kelso lost to Mark Morris 21-7.

Columbia River (1-0): Columbia River got its season off to a good start with solid production from the running game. … RB Remick Kawawak rushed for 144 yards on 21 carries and TD. QB Clayton Frank rushed for 77 yards on 18 carries. … Frank also moved the ball by passing, completing 11 of 23 pass for 70 yards.

Kelso (0-1): The Hilanders played solid defense in the first half against Mark Morris, limiting the Monarchs to 18 rushing yards. .. Kelso led 7-0 at halftime on a Tyler Covel TD. … But the tables quickly turned in the second half, as Kelso managed only two first downs in the second half.

Bottom line: Like last year’s game at River, this one figures to be another defensive battle. But at this point, it looks like River has a bit more firepower on offense.
