Camas gets ready for bi-district baseball playoffs

Camas pitcher Kurt Yinger said the Papermakers were not thinking about their 19-0 regular-season record heading into Thursday’s 3A district title game, even if that’s all others wanted to talk about.

“I looked at it yesterday, and I saw that we needed to win seven games to reach the state title games,” Yinger said after Camas beat Mountain View 3-2 for the district title. “Today’s win was win No. 1. We need six more — a seven-game winning streak — to get back to where we were last year, playing for the state championship.”

Actually, the Papermakers only need four more wins to return the 3A state championship game.

The first game will come Wednesday in a 3A bi-district quarterfinal game. A win in that game will guarantee the Papermakers a berth in the state tournament. The bi-district semifinal and championship games only determine seeding to state.

Once at state, regardless of where they’re seeded, the Papermakers would need three consecutive wins to return to the state title.

But clearly, Yinger wasn’t thinking about losing any games this postseason, regardless of what was at stake.

The Class 3A Greater St. Helens League and Narrows League have settled their berths to the 3A bi-district tournament next week. The South Puget Sound League is still settling their spots Friday and Saturday.

Actually it’s the South Puget Sound/Seamount/Olympic League playoffs. And really the only Olympic team participating is Bremerton. So it’s the South Puget Sound/Seamount/Bremerton playoffs, and that’s what it’s noted as SSB on the bi-district bracket (They really need to come up with a better abbreviation).

So here’s where we stand on completing the SSB portions of the bracket. Decatur plays Highline and Peninsula faces Kennedy today in a loser-out games. All other SSB games are Saturday.
