Football coaches to discuss playoffs

Coaches constantly try to make their teams better. Now, more than a dozen football coaches and athletic directors want to see what they can do to improve the football playoff system.

The group plans to meet with John Miller, Washington Interscholastic Activities Association assistant executive director, on May 1 at Kennedy Catholic High School to discuss changes to the state playoffs.

“It’s an informal get-together,” said Kennedy Catholic football coach Bob Bourgette, president of the Washington State Football Coaches Association. “We want to see if there’s any way we can make the system we have now better. We want to work with the WIAA to see if there’s a way to make improvements.”

Every corner of the state and all but one classification will be represented.

Among the coaches expected to attend are Jim Sharkey of Ferris, Rick Giampietri of Central Valley, Jamie Plenkovich of Ferndale, Dave Miller of Lakes, Jon Eagle of Camas, Randy Affholter of Ellensburg, Sid Otton of Tumwater, Rob Freise of Willapa Valley, Dave Ward of Archbishop Murphy, Curt Kramme of Lynden and Bourgette.
