Evergreen coverage plan

The Evergreen boys basketball team clinched the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League championship Monday night, and some of their fans were wondering why the Plainsmen did not get as much coverage as the Skyview girls, who also clinched Monday night.

Good question and it deserved an answer.

We planned on covering the Skyview-Evergreen girls game because the winner was going to be the champion and the top seed. We sent a photographer knowing that the winner of the game was the winner of the whole league.

Evergreen needed a win AND a Battle Ground loss on Monday to clinch the top seed and outright title. With our staffing on Monday nights, we could not be at two places at once. So we went with the game — the girls game — that had everything riding on that one game.

Our copy editors and the reporter in the office made sure to get Evergreen as the main headline for our roundup section of high school sports games. (We goofed with the overall record. Evergreen is 15-5, and we made that correction online.)

We also plan on having a bigger story on the Plainsmen to run prior to their bi-district playoff game. As the league and district champion, Evergreen will advance straight to bi-district, with a home game.
