Camas soccer shuts out Kelso
The Camas Papermakers tied Kelso in the loss column, handing the Hilanders their first loss of the girls soccer season Thursday night.
Camas improved to 4-1 in the 3A Greater St. Helens League with a 2-0 victory. Kelso fell to 4-1-1.
Janae Benson scored an unassisted goal at about the 25th minute, and the match stayed there until the final few minutes of the second half, when Annike Sumpter found the net for some breathing room. Credit Adrienne Engel with the assist on that one.
Andrea Soderberg had five saves in the shutout.
“They’re an active team. They have good players,” Camas coach Roland Minder said of Kelso. “Our defense held pretty well. We defended pretty solidly.”
Kelso sits atop the standings at 4-1-1, followed by Camas. Defending state champion Columbia River is 3-1-1.
