4A, 3A softball appears ready to start

OK, here is the skinny on the schedule for the Class 4A and 3A state softball tournaments in Tacoma.

As of right now (about 9:45 a.m.) it is cloudy, windy, and unseasonably cold. But, again right now, it is not raining.

Games will begin at 10 a.m. in the 4A tournament. Heritage plays University. In the 3A tourney, Union will take on Sedro Wooley at 11:30 a.m. Prairie will face Holy Names at 1 p.m., and Camas will square off with Everett at 1 p.m.

That all seems normal.

Then it gets a little weird.

If all the games on the schedule get played today, there will be a champion, a second-place team, and six third-place teams. Yes, six. Those final games in the consolation bracket will not be played. The championship semifinals losers will tie for third, as well as the four teams that are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Back to the championship bracket … after the first-round games, the quarterfinals will be at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m., depending on the bracket. The semifinals in both tournaments are 6 p.m., with the championship game at 8 p.m. The teams that reach the finals will play four games today.

I will update our twitter account at twitter.com/360preps with scores throughout the day. Priority updates will be on the championship bracket games.
