Counting Girl Scout cookie calories

It’s cookie time.

Girl Scout cookies are now on sale.

To celebrate cookie season, the people at Everyday Health had a nutritionist give her take on the Thin Mints, Samoas and Do-Si-Dos.

Nutritionist Maureen Namkoong identified the Girl Scout cookies that are best and worst for your waistline.

Dos:

Do-Si-Dos (Peanut Butter Sandwich): Two cookies have 110 calories and 5 grams of fat (1.5 grams saturated).

Shortbread (Trefoils): Four cookies have 120 calories and 4.5 grams of fat (2 grams saturated).

Thank U Berry Munch: Two cookies have 120 calories and 5 grams of fat (2 grams saturated).

Don’ts:

Caramel deLites (Samoas): Don’t let the name fool you. Two cookies have 140 calories and 7 grams of fat (6 grams saturated).

Thin Mints: Despite popular belief, these delicious little cookies are among the worst. Four cookies have 160 calories and 8 grams of fat (5 grams saturates).

Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs): Two cookies have 130 calories and 8 grams of fat (5 grams saturated).

My two favorite cookies – the Thin Mints and Samoas – are, of course, on the thumbs down list.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who likes the cookie that’s most damaging for the waistline.

The Girl Scouts website has a poll asking visitors their favorite cookie.

At the top of the list: Samoas (33%), Thin Mints (28%) and Peanut Butter Patties (14%).

At the bottom: Thank U Berry Munch (1%) and Dulce de Leche (1%).

The other “thumbs up” cookies are low on the popularity list as well. Only 5 percent of respondents admitted Do-Si-Dos and Shortbread were their favorites.

The key, according to Namkoong, is moderation. So I will continue to eat a moderate amount of Thin Mints this cookie season.

Even Cookie Monster acknowledges cookies are a sometimes food.
