Go Red for Women

Women throughout the metro area will converge Wednesday for the seventh annual Go Red for Women luncheon.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Governor Hotel, 614 S.W. 11th Ave. in Portland.

Tickets are $125 each or $2,500 for a corporate table of 10. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 503-595-2276 or visit http://www.PDXGoRedLuncheon.org.

The Go Red for Women event raises money and public awareness about cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death among women. Each year, the disease kills 460,000 people.

The Go Red for Women event features a health expo with networking, health screenings and pampering from 11 a.m. to noon; a special childhood obesity/family health breakout session from 11 to 11:30 a.m.; and lunch and the keynote address from noon to 1:15 p.m.

This year’s keynote speaker is Donna Hartley, an inspirational speaker and author who has cheated death three times since 1978 — the first by airplane crash, then cancer, and most recently heart disease.

All three events in Hartley’s life occurred on March 1.

March 1, 1978, she survived a fiery plane crash. March 1, 2002, she was diagnosed with stage III melanoma; today, she is cancer-free. Then on March 1, 2006, Hartley had unexpected open heart surgery to replace a faulty aortic valve.

Hartley chronicled her experiences in her book “Fire Up Your Heart! … Surviving Life’s Ups and Downs.”
