Vancouver summit to address health outside the doctor's office

Later this month, Community Choices will hold a summit for Clark County health professionals in order to brainstorm ways that they can, essentially, get out of their offices and into the community.

As it is, a doctor or nurse’s influence is limited to the few precious minutes they get to spend with a patient when he or she comes in for an exam. But the real healing and prevention takes place in the course of a patient’s everyday life.

At the summit, Dr. Maxine Hayes, state health officer in Washington and Dr. Alan Melnick with Clark County Public Health, will lead a discussion about the social and economic factors that influence health in this community.

They’ll also try to identify how health professionals can work with community partners to address these factors.
