Some Athletes Worth Reading About

Good story from Matt Calkins about a swimmer for Skyview High School who is nearly blind.

The story is so good that it got picked up by Yahoo! Sports on its high schools blog.

This continues a spate of national attention for the Sports staff at The Columbian. Or, more accurately, for athletes we have been covering.

Paul Valencia had a terrific story a couple weeks ago about the starting middle linebacker at Fort Vancouver, who happens to be a 144-pound girl. That story found its way into USA Today and the New York Post, among others. We even received a copy of a small paper in Michigan, which used the article and several photos to fill the entire cover of its Lifestyles section.

So, good job by the Sports staff; it’s nice when we write stories that people think are worth reading. And great job by our local athletes.
