Wind Storm Anniversary Today
Today is the 16th anniversary of the last major wind storm to strike the Pacific Northwest on December 12th 1995. Similar to the November 13th 1981 “Friday the 13th” windstorm, the storm deepened to approximately 954mb along a powerful jet stream as it raced north and east off the Oregon and Washington coastline, just inside 130W longitude. Violent winds of 100-120mph struck the coastline and 60-80mph struck the the Willamette Valley at just after noon on the 12th. Strong winds continued into the evening hours, before finally relenting. The storm made landfall on the NW tip of Washington state. This storm also set records at several cities in Oregon for the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded. Portland’s barometric pressure dropped to 28.71″ at it’s lowest point during the storm and still stands as the lowest December barometric pressure reading on record (1871-2011). The average return cycle for a storm of this magnitude is about once every 15-ish years. The previous notable storm of similar size and path struck on November 13th & 14th 1981. Using this methodology, Oregon and Washington are now overdue for another “big” windstorm.
Here is a great video retrospective produced by KATU-TV in Portland just after the storm. Thanks to our friends at KATU for this great video memory. Click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfVH7u…
