Hottest Weather of Summer Coming This Weekend
Summer is finally going to make a “full” appearance in the Pacific Northwest this weekend. After a June and July that featured below normal temperatures, near record rainfall (June) and plenty of morning low clouds, a strong upper level ridge of high pressure will build over the Pacific Northwest Friday and last through the weekend. The hottest day will likely be Saturday when valley temperatures will soar between 90-100 degrees from Medford, Oregon north to Longview, Washington. Temperatures in the 80’s will be prevalent throughout the Puget Sound. The coast will remain a cool retreat, with temperatures in the 60’s with plenty of sunshine. Oddly enough, the Portland International Airport has failed to register a single 90 degree high temperature in the month of July since 2010. More over, the first 90 degree day last year in Portland was not recorded until August 20th 2011. The hot ridge of high pressure that has been baking the inner mountain west is going to slide west over the Pacific Northwest this weekend, which will allow upper level offshore flow to develop. This will be the warmest weekend of the year so far. Although it will be hot, daily records are at or above 100 degrees in Portland and won’t likely be in jeopardy this weekend.
Here are the top ten highest daytime temps ever set in Portland. The period of record for this report is 1871-Present and include both downtown and the airport. These are sorted first by high temp, then by most recent occurrence —
