Week 7 roundup: How Clark County players fared

Kevin Haynes and Jesse Zalk used to be rivals when the they played for Battle Ground and Prairie, respectively.

Saturday, they both led Central Washington to victory. How did they do it? Read below ….

Colorado State

Garrett Grayson, Heritage, Sr. QB — Completed 26 of 36 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns as Colorado State beat Nevada 31-24. Grayson had TD passes of 51 and 42 yards to Rashard Higgins as the Rams built a 31-3 lead, then withstood a Nevada rally. He did not throw an interception.

Central Washington

Kevin Haynes, Battle Ground, Fr.* LB — Had this third interception of the season in the Wildcats’ 61-34 win over South Dakota Mines. With Central up 31-21 in the second quarter, Haynes returned the pick 50 yards to the South Dakota Mines 2-yard line.
 
“I dropped back and read the quarterback’s eyes the whole way,” Haynes said. “He didn’t see me step underneath and he threw it right to me and I just took it up the sideline. I thought I had kept my feet in when I dove into the end zone. But, apparently, I stepped out.”

Haynes also had a team-high 12 tackles (7 solo) and one forced fumble.

Jesse Zalk, Prairie, So. WR — Had a team-high six catches for 116 yards and a 23-yard touchdown reception. He also had kickoff returns of 62 and 32 yards.

“We ran an outside corner route,” Zalk said about the touchdown. “I made a move to the post and back to the corner and he ended up making a good throw.”
 
Zalk also caught several screen passes that picked up good gains.
 
“A lot of times they were leaving Jesse uncovered,” CWU coach Ian Shoemaker said. “So we were flipped the bubble [screen pass] out to him and took advantage of it.”
 
Zalk also returned two kickoffs for 94 yards. His 62-yard return worked as designed. The second, for 32 yards, was different.
 
“I just didn’t see anything on the right, so I just cut back left and tried to follow Greg [Logan],” he said. “It worked out good.”
 
Asked to describe the victory, Zalk summed it up by simply saying, “This was a fun one.”
Josh Stolz, Mountain View, So. OL — Normally the starting left guard, Stolz did not play after suffering a knee injury last week.
Gabe Rego, Union, So. LB — PHad one tackle.
Kaben Humphrey-Butler, Union, So. WR — Did not play.
Tyler Grant, Prairie, Fr. OL — Did not play.
Leon Siofele, Union, Fr. RB — Did not play.

Eastern Oregon

John Payne, Camas, So.* DB — Had two tackles and one pass breakup in Eastern’s 55-7 loss to Carroll College.
Jorden Payne, Camas, Fr. DB — Did not play.
Jonathan Branson, Columbia River, Fr. Ath — Had one tackle in his first action of the season.
Jayson Branson, Columbia River, Fr., Combo — Did not play.
Bennett Muasau, Mountain View, Fr.* OL — Did not play.

Eastern Washington

T.J. Boatright, Union, Jr.* OL — Played in backup role in Eastern Washington’s 42-30 win over Southern Utah. The offensive line had to protect backup QB Jordan West, who started after Vernon Adams was lost for 3-6 weeks with a broken foot. The Eagles allowed three sacks.
Roldan Alcobendas, Camas, Fr.* K — Is out for an extended period after suffering a knee injury.
Zach Eagle, Camas, Fr. WR — Did not play.
Reilly Hennesey, Camas, Fr. QB — Did not play.
William Lopez, Skyview, Fr.* TE — Did not play.

George Fox

Austin Mace, Mountain View, Fr. RB — Had one run for five yards and a punt return for zero yards in the Bruins’ 59-0 loss to Linfield.
Jesse Tonkinson, Hockinson, Fr. DB — Had one tackle against Linfield.
John Smarr, Battle Ground, Fr. LB —  Did not play.
Michael Polyakov, La Center, Fr. RB —  Did not play.
Brock Sparks, Union, FR. LB —  Did not play.

Trent Cowan, Union, So., WR/DB — Did not play in Idaho’s 47-24 loss to Georgia Southern.

Idaho State

CJ Hatchett, Heritage, Jr.* WR — Played but did not record a stat in the Bengals 66-14 win over Simon Fraser.

Linfield

Jeremy Girod, Fort Vancouver, Sr. DE — Had a team-high six tackles, including five solo, and two sacks for minus-14 yards in Linfield’s 59-0 win over George Fox. He also caught a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Matt Matteo, Skyview, Fr. C — Saw his first action as a Wildcat in a backup role.

Kieran McDonagh, Skyview, Jr. QB — Completed 14 of 36 passes for 224 yards, one interception and a 50-yard touchdown pass in the Vikings’ 24-16 loss to North Dakota.
