Martini time in Oliver’s

Oliver's classic martini

Oliver’s classic martini

After the dinner last weekend in Seattle, the one for the Epic Teachers project for  the archdiocese, I packed up and headed downtown to Oliver’s in the Mayflower Park Hotel where I was staying.

I figured it was time to relax, so I ordered Oliver’s classic martini with two olives. Not only is Oliver’s a great bar with beautiful furnishings and leaded glass windows that look out on Olive Street, but also it is perfectly safe for a single  woman to enjoy a cocktail and relax. I ordered the drink and played Words With Friends. I sent a couple of  my WWF pals the picture of the martini because it’s a preview of the annual trip 10 of us take to Seattle for a weekend during the Christmas season.

That’s another story, of course. We’re all former co-workers. We ride Amtrak to downtown Seattle, then roam the streets, eating, drinking, shopping and visiting.

So the next time you’re in downtown Seattle and you want a fabulous cocktail, check out Oliver’s. Cheers!

What happens when a retired journalist spends a lot more time in the kitchen than in past years? She tries new dishes and jumps at the chance to write a blog about food, family and good times. My kids are grown now, but I'll be looking back at how they learned to cook, what recipes my husband (the Intrepid One) and I are experimenting with, and how food and conversation make for happy times in the kitchen. I worked for The Columbian for 15 years as a copy editor and another 10 elsewhere, though I didn't start out as a journalist. I thought I wanted to teach English literature. My husband grew up in Clark County, and I've lived here since 1983. My kids have grown and left home. Like my husband of 52 years, our adopted chocolate Lab would never pass up a chance for a tasty meal.
