Knitting whilst marathoning

A 41-year-old man knitted a 12-foot scarf while running in the Kansas City Marathon earlier this month.

You know, because running a marathon isn’t hard enough.

David Babcock stitched a red, orange and purple scarf measuring 12 feet, 1 ¾ inches while traversing the 26.2-mile course. He finished the run in 5 hours, 48 minutes and 27 seconds, according to a Kansas City Star article.

Would you believe he’s not the first person to complete such a task?

It’s true. Susie Hewer has twice knitted scarves — once in 2008 and again in April — while running the Flora London Marathon. Her longest scarf was 6 feet, 9 inches.

And would be you believe there’s a Guinness record for such a feat? (Of course you would. They have Guinness records for everything.)

Babcock is now the record holder for “Longest Scarf Knitted Whilst Running a Marathon.”

According to the Star article, the University of Central Missouri professor began running and knitting – separately – about three years ago. He decided to combine the activities because they’re both tedious.

Babcock has only fallen once in his knitting-while-running career, according to the Star. Other than that, he’s avoided any mishaps – and serious injuries – from running with needles.
