Product Review: Robbie's Hawaiian Sweet and Sour Sauce
Initial Thoughts: If you’ve read many of my blog posts, you most likely picked up on the idea that I am a from scratch as much as possible kind of cook. I rarely find a bottled sauce that I would spend my money on, let alone recommend. That being said, when asked to do this review I reminded myself that there are those of you out there that are looking for a ready made bottled sauce.
Packaging and Size: For me, clear and simple is always best. I don’t want to have to hunt for product information or ingredients. Robbie’s labeling is just that. Most of my questions were answered by just looking the front of the label. To the point labeling, just what I like. Before opening and tasting the sauce, I was a bit concerned about the size. It comes in a 13.5 ounce jar…about the size of a small jar of jam.
Flavor: Robbie’s Hawaiian Sweet and Sour Sauce is loaded with flavor. My concerns over the size of the jar quickly faded when I opened the jar and took a taste! Natural flavor, not chemical or fake just clean, fresh flavor. I used this sauce to finish off a pork tenderloin roast, adding it at the end of roasting. The flavor was amazing! Next time, I think I’d use part of the sauce as a marinade prior to roasting as well. It did have a bit of an acidic flavor, but the sweetness and the kick from the ginger rounded out the flavor perfectly.
Serving Suggestions: The serving size according to the jar is 2 Tablespoons, with 17 servings per jar. This sauce goes a long way. Add it to your favorite stir-fry, rice, chicken, pork, tofu, as a dipping sauce for French fries and so much more. So many options for this sauce.
Overall Review: Honestly, when I started out to review this product, I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do. How’s that for honesty? It’s not as “sweet” as many commercial sweet and sour sauces are. This sauce is really more on the sour side, but the flavor combination works. Like I stated earlier, a little bit goes a long way.
I love the fact that Robbie’s is a healthier alternative, it’s low in sodium, gluten-free, fat free, cholesterol free, has no preservatives and has no high fructose corn syrup. How often do you find a product that can say all of that and taste amazing at the same time?
Where can I get some? Robbie’s website has a store locater. In Southwest Washington there is only one retailer that carries it that I could find, Lingonberries Market in Vancouver, Washington.
