A reader wrote me that there are a group of Washington Conservation Corps workers doing a wonderful job of clearing blackberry bushes, planting trees, and working on the trails of Abrams Park. She said they should be recognized and commended.
I looked into this program, and found that the workers enrolled in this WCC program earn the Washington State minimum wage, but if they work full time on the job for a year they earn a $5,550 education award. Half-time positions earn a $2,775 education award. The money can be used to attend college or to pay off qualified student loans. Sounds like a pretty job deal to me, and might be a good way for young people with few resources to get an education. Working never hurt anyone!
