Thought for the Week

First ChildAs a parent, you constantly improvise. And because circumstances are never quite the same again, what worked once may not work a second time. In that sense, it is a bit like a comedian who offers a punch line. It might have had the audience doubled over in laughter during his first set of the night. But maybe the second time around, his timing is off, or he emphasizes the wrong word, or the crowd is tired late on Friday night. And nobody laughs. Life, like parenting, is funny that way.                 –Carolyn Goodman, in “My Mantelpiece, a memoir of survival and social justice.”
